Day 12: Zion National Park - The Narrows!

We wanted to have enough time to do the full trip and back to The Narrows, so we woke up early and for once didn't have to pack of our tents or anything. Somehow, we managed to take quite some time to get everything ready. The gear we had rented the night before, but we had to prepared the food and waterproof bags and whatnot. We finally got on the bus around 10 (no one had a cell phone and therefore we had no way of telling what time it was). After an initial hike of about 20 minutes along a paved road, we started trekking through the water, headed towards the spring which marks the end of the hike.

Everything about the trip was awesome. The sights, trudging through the water, stopping for lunch. All a great time. We each fell at some point throughout the hike, myself being the first. John got in way too deep at some point, having to battle the current to come back.

The most interesting experience was had by Idoia. After we had made it to the spring, Idoia in her curiosity walked a bit further upstream to see what else was there. She waded to a sandbank in the middle of the river, and all of a sudden she looked startled. She called for help, at first not too seriously (at least that was my impression) but then she started to panic a bit. She was stuck in quicksand! I couldn't believe it, hearing about it from cartoon since you were little and finally seeing it! As I went towards here, I could actually see her slowly sinking. It was all pretty exciting I must say, although Idoia might not agree. I was able to pull her out after not too much trouble, so no one was (physically) harmed.

We decided to head back to the shuttle after a about 10 minutes or so at the spring. It took us 4 hours to get there, and we were supposed to return our equipment by 6 PM so we didn't have too much time to spare (it was about 2 at this point). We made it back much quicker, pretty exhausted, in just under 3 hours.

After returning our stuff, we each had a well-needed shower and grabbed dinner at a nearby pub. The Sunday night football game was on (I had yet to watch a game since the season started), although it was rained out for most of the time we were there. It was great to have some hot food after a long day, and we had a good time at the pub, mostly due to our seemingly high busboy.

  5. This is the only post where I compared the Spanish version to the English version in re: Idoia's quicksand adventure. And they were different accounts! Yay me!

Also, you better be reading these goddamn comments.
