Day 8: Arches National Park / Parque Nacional de los Arcos

We are starting to get used to sleeping in the tent, sleeping comfortably the entire night. This particular camping was very nice, except that there was no running water at the site, which means that the bathrooms had large deposits and they made the entire site smell quite a bit. In any case, we got up nice and early to try to beat the crowds at Arches National Park.

Ya nos vamos acostumbrando a dormir en la tienda, cada vez estamos más cómodos, además este camping estaba muy bien aunque el baño era de esos que no tienen para tirar de la bomba y siempre se hace un poco más incómodo. Nos levantamos tempranito y nos fuimos al Parque Nacional de los Arcos para intentar evitar las multitudes.

Nuestra primera parada fue, el muy deseado por Martín, Delicate arch. Es una caminata de un par de horas. Nos abastecimos bien de agua, cosa que le preocupaba mucho a Martín, tanto que luego, a medio camino, se dió cuenta que se había olvidado la cámara de fotos pequeña (llevamos dos, una pequeñita y otra más grande). Bueno según él a mi se me había olvidado... yo estaba convencida que se la había dado, pero bueno... Así que a medio camino, cuando ya habíamos subido una cuesta bastante empinada y bajo el sol, quiso dar la vuelta para cogerla. Después de un rato le convencí para que no bajara, ya que teníamos la grande y los móviles para sacar fotos, creo que era suficiente... ¿no?.. Y por fin, llegamos al Delicate arch, seguro que a muchos de vosotros os suena de verlo en fotos o en algún anuncio. Es precioso y la verdad que impone.

Our first hike at Arches was to see the Delicate Arch. It was a 3 mile hike, with an elevation change of about 500 feet. Not too bad, except in our hurry we forgot to eat breakfast. We had plenty of water, and some salami, so we started on the trek. After about a half an hour, I realized we had left the small camera in the car. I wanted to go back to get it, but Idoia insisted that was a dumb idea and that we had the big camera anyway so to just continue. She made a good argument, so we went on our way. We finally made it to the Delicate Arch, and it was a beautiful site. The hike was well worth it!

Ya cuando llegamos al coche... cha chaaaaaan... la cámara de fotos estaba en un bolsillo de la mochila que Martín había cargado durante todo el camino... en fin... no digo más ;)

When we finally made it back to the car, we couldn't find the camera anywhere. Until I realized it was inside my bag the entire time, tucked neatly in a side pocket. We all make mistakes :-)

Después de esta bonita caminata ya fuimos con el coche parando en los puntos más llamativos del parque. Bueno hicimos otra pequeña caminata a otro par de arcos que no se podían ver a simple vista. Aquí os dejamos unas cuantas fotos. 

We then continued on to see the rest of the park. We did some other shorter hikes to various arches, and at one point we got rained on heavily for about 10 minutes, only to have it clear up again into the hot afternoon sun. By the time we finished our last hike, I must say I was exhausted as we had been at the park at this point for over 7 hours without any food!

Cuando terminamos con este precioso Parque, fuimos a Dead Horse Point State Park, no lo teníamos planeado, pero vimos que en nuestra guía de Utah lo marcaban como algo espectacular, así que... allí que nos fuimos. Y la verdad, mereció muchísimo la pena, un paisaje precioso. Este lugar se usaba para acorralar a los caballos salvajes; la traducción podría ser "lugar del caballo muerto" y se llama así porque según una leyenda, los cowboys elegían a los mejores y dejaban a los demás allí, muchos de ellos no encontraron la manera de salir y murieron deshidratados viendo las aguas del río Colorado. Por cierto, otra curiosidad, en este punto se rodó la última escena de Thelma y Louise. 

After Arches, we headed over to Dead Horse Point State Park, just about an hour away north of Moab. This wasn't in our initial plans, but we heard good things so we decided to stop by. The views were spectacular, and we stayed until sunset. On a side note, we found out later on that the famous last scene of Thelma and Louise was filmed at this park, although it was supposed to resemble Grand Canyon.

We finished this long day of hiking and beautiful scenery at a Super 8 motel in Green River, Utah. A tactical stop before heading towards southwestern Utah.
