Day 6: Navajo Nation / Nación Navajo

We set the alarm clock early to try to catch the sunrise over the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, when we poked our head out of the tent, all we saw were clouds, so we decided to get some more sleep. After an hour or so, we saw some light shining through so we got up and headed over to the desert view. The sun didn't last long, however, and we were stuck with a foggy canyon view. We made the best of it, and had some breakfast at a picnic table by the rim, watching the clouds pass over and seeing the buses of poor tourists come out only to be disappointed. We did manage to catch a decent look at the canyon, so we were feeling pretty happy.

Nos pusimos la alarma muy temprano para poder ver el amanecer en el Gran cañón, pero cuando nos asomamos de la tienda nos dimos cuenta que estaba totalmente nublado, por lo que optamos por seguir durmiendo. Una hora más tarde vimos que salía un rallito de sol, así que recogimos todo y nos fuimos pitando para ver si la niebla había desaparecido del todo, pero nada, ahí seguía!!! Aún y todo intentamos disfrutar de la mañana y desayunamos tranquilamente al aire libre. La verdad es que daba pena ver a tanta gente pasar emocionada pensando que iba a ver una imagen que siempre estaría en su memoria y luego notar cierta cara de decepción. Al final, gracias a nuestra persistencia conseguimos un par de fotos decentes de la parte este del Gran cañón. 

I was wearing my "just woke up" clothes, not very conducive to hiking. Naturally, as I tried to jump the stairs to the watchtower, I took a spill, and smashed the small camera, and my arm.... Idoia seemed quite amused since she had already mentioned how ridiculous I look and that I should probably be wearing my shoes. Turns out she may have been right.

Bueno hay que hacer una mención a la ropa que se me puso Martín para ir a andar.... pantalón corto, manga corta y chancletas, muy apropiado. Y pasó lo que tenía que pasar. Una de las veces que tuvo que subir un par de escaleras, se dió de bruces contra el suelo; tanto la cámara de fotos como el brazo de Martín salieron un poco mal parados.

At this point we had to make a decision. Do we stay longer to wait for the weather to improve, or should we just move on? Since the forecast was for more of the same for the next two days, we decided it would be best to move on. As we were heading out, we spoke to an employee who said that this type of weather is very rare in the canyon. I suppose that just means we have to come back in the future ;-)

En este punto tuvimos que tomar una decisión, quedarnos una noche más o darnos por vencidos. Como vimos que el pronóstico no iba a mejorar en los dos siguientes días, decidimos que teníamos que seguir con nuestro viaje. Así que nos fuimos con la idea de volver en un futuro y aprovechar mejor la visita con buen tiempo. 

This time we headed out from the desert view exit, and saw some amazing scenery on the way (again, with rain, but still impressive). The road was alongside the little Colorado river and the canyon it carved out. Not as large as the grand canyon, but still made for beautiful scenery. There were also a bunch of little Navajo shops along the way since we were in Navajo Nation now. 

Salimos por la parte este del Parque y pudimos ver unas vistas impresionantes del Little Colorado river que, la verdad, ya no esperábamos ver. A pesar de la lluvia que nos acompañó casi todo el camino pudimos disfrutar de las vistas. A lo largo de la carretera hay un montón de puestos de los indios Navajos, ya que nos encontrábamos en la Nación Navajo. 

Our destination was Monument Valley, but we had no place to sleep so we ended up stopping at a Burger King in Page, AZ to look for lodging there. We checked out the Glen Canyon Dam while we were there, which separates the upper from the lower Colorado River basin. 

En el camino hacia el Valle de los monumentos paramos en un Burger King de la ciudad de Page (Arizona) para comer algo y aprovechar que tenían wi fi para avanzar con el blog y buscar alojamiento. Nos dimos cuenta que estábamos al lado de la presa del Cañón Glen, así que nos fuimos a verla.

Finally we headed for Goulding's camground after learning they had open spots. The campground is in Navajo Nation, just over the border into Utah. It is right next to Monument Valley, which was our next stop on the tour. We arrived at the campsite late at night, in the rain, and tired. We finally chose a site, and by this time the rain was coming down pretty hard, so we decided to just sleep in the car. After strategically setting up towels, jackets, and blankets, we had our one personal private room to sleep in.

Encontramos sitio en el camping Goulding's que está al al lado del Valle de los monumentos. Llegamos tarde por la noche y encima jarreando, por lo que nos decantamos por quedarnos a dormir allí, pero dentro  del coche.
